I was pretty floored immediately! it amazed me how the once fantastic-sounding 319s now sounded too brite/almost brittle and without the full character that the 219s now have. This was the complete opposite when I first compared the 319s to the 219s. And to think I was gonna sell the 219s on eBay!";

It's that innate thing that can't really be put into words that haven't already been used or said by many others! All I know is what I'm now hearing is IT!!! That sound that many of the true classics have, yet not many can afford unless they get their 2500's mod ... I didn't like it I Loved it!! These Mic’s sound amazing very retro very high end. I am liking them better than my Neuman and B.L.U.E. mics. I am still in the burn in period and everything is greatly improved. quotes[6] = "I've got to tell you I was really skeptical about a mike that wasn't in the high end price range. We use an assortment of Neumann's TLM-103, U87, U47 and a Manley Gold reference so I thought I was going to go slumming. We'll that wasn't the case at all. The modified 219 hung right in with them all, in fact it was a hands down favorite over the TLM-103. The middle and top end of the 219 is GREAT! It's quiet and it will certainly be in my line up from now on. Keep in mind I only tested this mike on vocals but I have no doubt it will perform well on acoustics instruments as well. Thanks again";

Cymbals came out way better than the 414's which seem to have a certain distorted shrillness when playing with high energy. Overall the 414's seemed squashed or compressed when compared to the 219 moded version. Kind of unbalanced! So I had to try them on a guitar amp--and guess what it sounds f***ing great. quotes[22] = "Got the 219 yesterday. Thanks so much for such a quick turn-around. I had a chance to use both of them on a session last night and wanted to share a few of my observations. I've always liked the Oktava mk219/319. I always grab one to throw up at a band rehearsal or what not to capture a performance for later. They were my first real condenser mics and they've always had this detail to them that not many other mics have. The problem with the sound is that they always sound like you're recording in a gigantic cardboard box! For this reason, they stopped being a staple in my recording arsenal once I got some better sounding microphones. I still loved those mics, though, and that's why I sent them to you for modding. I wanted to put them back into rotation. After getting both mics back, i've had a chance to test them on a few things. My first use was on male vocals. This mic competes with ALL of my other microphones now! The cardboard box is GONE! I was equally impressed with acoustic guitar. What really got me was how well this mic now works on a guitar amp. GREAT TONE! I can't wait to try these as drum overheads sometime this weekend. I can't thank you enough for these mics. You've taken microphones that have seen little use in years and made them into something usable again. These are definately go-to mics from now on for a number of things. I'll be sending my mk319s soon as well as my mkl-2500. Thanks again Michael!";

quotes[23] = "I’m glad, by answering my questions, you made the compelling argument to mod the 2500s along with the 219s. I’ll now have many usable options. Wow, the detail of the 219 is striking. It’s an amazingly even sounding mic. It’s a nice blend of a focused, forward and detailed sound, that is not harsh or strident at all. So far, it’s been very nice on vocals and acoustic guitar, both with the Vipre and the ADL 600. The 2500 is a great other flavor. It’s less forward and has an incredible midrange. Without being too soft, it’s a nice vintage sound. It also reacted well with different preamps. I found for a live ac gtr and vox the 2500 in the vox position and the 219 in the gtr position really complement each other. You’ve given me (4) really great mics for less than the cost of one mediocre mic. I think your winning combo is your price point and the truly amazing results. Many Thanks.";

quotes[24] = "Received my modded MK-219 yesterday. Thanks for the excellent work (and good packing job). The mic has all of the nuances that you mentioned in your online article. I'm very pleased. It has gone from being an extra mic in my collection to one which I would not hesitate to use anytime, whether on guitars, drums vocals, grand pianos or horns. It's great to know that my initial investment in these mics was this worthwhile, and so is the modification/upgrade. The look is much cooler, too!";

quotes[35] = "Well I finally had some time to sit down with the Michael Joly upgraded Oktava MK219s. First of all, the mics are a lot quieter in comparison to before the upgrades. Second of all, the frequency balance on the acoustic guitar is incredible. It's like he took a wad of cotton off of the capsule. I considered the AT4047 to be my top line condenser mic but it sounds boxy in comparison. I really like what the 219 does to my voice when I get close to it, very big. quotes[38] = "I received the Oktavas today! Unbelievable...I recorded some tracks right before shipping them and compared them today. I tried them as room mics and then as overheads on my Tama Rockstar Zildjian set. The low end has that scary clarity that I've heard in other studios but never attained in my modest basement. The high end details were very pleasing to the ear, nothing like the abrasive overtones that were present pre-mod. Vocals were stunning; I did a comparison with my AT4047 (my favorite mic). The Octo-Joly was on a whole new level. Next was my crunching guitar cabinet: success! I was so inspired, I spent the whole day experimenting. This mic used to be in the back of my closet, now it is first in line! I plan on bringing the mic up to a couple of bigger studios that I work in for a shootout with Studio Projects T3 (tube), Lawson (various capsules) and Brauner (tube), among others. I'll give you an email afterwards to let you know the results. Thanks again for bringing a professional mic down to the price point that commonfolk can afford. Quick update... got to try recording last night with the mics as overheads and as suspected they are perfect..bright, full, clear, cymbals now really sound like cymbals.. It sounds more open and less boxy I used the 219 on a voiceover I'm doing, then compared it to another version recorded through a SM7. I prefer the 219... I LOVE this microphone! quotes[60] = "Hey Michael, I must say although the V69 was kind of the bulk of our conversations, the MK319 that you modded is an astonishing sounding mic. And I took your suggestion and tried it on my voice, A/B'ed that and the V69 through the same signal path that has been set in stone for my vocals, and the MK319 sounded infinitely better, smoother, creamier, open, airy and just perfect. I am so happy with it, I can't believe it. It out-shined the repair of the V69 by leagues. And as far as the session I had, we used both, but the MK319 as a drum room mic about 8 feet back and chest level to the drummer was incredible...it reminded me of all those old early rock recordings done with a mono mic setup for the kit. Amazing. It captured a great picture of the whole kit with a ton of clarity. And by the way, money is kind of tight(when isn't it?)but I may take you up on that offer of remodeling the V69 entirely. For $150 or whatever you quoted me, if it comes anywhere near the MK319 I'm a seriously happy guy for $450 total. I think this is such the smart way to go as opposed to springing for a $1100 mic, for you certainly get it to sound like a mic in that price range. It's such a smarter move all around. quotes[64] = "I just want to give you a quick update on the MK-319, now that I have had a chance to record with it. Before modification, the 319 had a dark, muffled, fuzzy, wooly sound quality and the only times I ever used it was in recording backing tracks that I specifically wanted to blend into an indistinct wall of sound. Since getting the standard mod, the 319 has developed more clarity and presence, while still retaining its former warmth. Now I would not hesitate to use it for certain lead vocals, as it is quite flattering to some voices (my voice, in particular). The bottom line is that your standard mod turned my MK-319 into a decent quality mic with a pleasing character. That was money well spent. Thanks!";

No eq needed, nice and open, not too bright... Also used it on a vocal take with a guy whose voice is not flattered by too many mics. Sounded great with this one though. I am going to tell a few people who I know already like their 219s about you! Thanks again.";

I ran it flat and she was back about 18 in. looking down at her lyric sheet (new song demo) and it was perfect. The guitar could only sound better if I had a pairto use on it, but it sounds really warm and articulate. I am happy and I will send you something to listen to onceI do a few more sessions . Thanks Michael.";

quotes[67] = "I used it (319 Standard mod) today. It's remarkably smooth all around. I used it on voice only, so far. It's not susceptible to pops for some reason. I used a pop filter at one point, but I was surprised at how delicate the capsule ISN'T. I'm very satisfied. Very nice top. I used a Summit pre and a Summit TLA 50 with it, used the high pass on it, and dialed in the impedance. 100% satisfied.";

I've compared it on vocals with mics costing three to four times as much and it holds its own with anything. I have never gotten as good as service and quality work from anyone. quotes[74] = "You might recall me saying that I didn't like large diaphragm mics for acoustic guitar--they tend to sound a little stiff to me...If you recall, I'm a folkie and I typically use very strong Martins with a big bottom--very difficult to record and capture the real, full sound. For whatever reason, the first thing I recorded when I got the PE mod 319 back was a dreadnaught I refer to as a very musical blunderbuss. I was amazed to find the 319 PE caught the whole sound of the guitar with nothing left out and no boom problems. I didn't have to cut anything on the bottom end. I had the same result with a couple of my other guitars. I have 2 AKG 451's, an AKG 414, & 2 unmodded Oktava MK 12's--none of them even come close to the 319 for a full, natural steel string guitar sound. I tried a brief vocal, but I haven't had time to really evaluate the mic for vocals. I have little doubt it will shine there too. Seems to me the basic mod greatly improves the 319, but the PE mod really makes it sing.  Any of your customers who don't go for the full Monty (basic & PE) are being penny wise and pound foolish";

I've been pretty busy, so I'm still looking forward to doing some vocals and further experimentation with the 319's.  so far, i'm very pleased.  thanks!";

quotes[77] = "I just LOVE the MK319. Wow. Gorgeous. It sounds wide open, with just a hint of sheen, and virtually no sibilence. This mic has a combination of characteristics that are just about ideal. Usually, I find I hate singing straight into a mic, except for ribbons. I usually turn them a bit to reduce the excitedness/esh/grit/hair, whatever you want to call it. I don't need to do that with the 319. The little bit of exciteness is just right for my voice. Oh, the MK319 sounds great through every preamp I tried (CL 7602, Sytek, Sebatron, Joemeek, the Brick) and takes EQ nicely. FWIW, the 319 could really be pushed and manipulated with EQ and take on lots of very useful timbres. EX: With a little touch of EQ, I could make the 319 sound just about exactly like that Neumann on the voice-over clips; however, I doubt the Neumann would be so flexible as it already sounds processed. FWIW, tI much prefer the MK319 to the Neumann and now know it can do that sound too with a littl EQ coaxing (I prefer more neatural and neutral myself). Bottom line: I totally dig the 319 and know a few people I am going to recommend them to. I don't know of any other mic that has this blend of clarity and character, and often it seems it's a choice between one or the other";

quotes[78] = "I did run the mics against previously recorded tracks. I can surely hear the improvements in the high frequencies -- not only extending more but evening out the peak before the drop off. cymbals have a sweetness of tone below 10k that was not there before. The high bass / low mids are what surprised me most: how mushy and indistinct they were pre upgrade when compared with the definition that is there now. Since the sound is less weighty first listen makes you think you have lost something till you notice how much more you can distinguish in that frequency zone. That alone should make instruments gel in the mix better";

Before the mod, I didn't think these mics were anything special and to be used as secondary backup mics, but now I think that I'll be using them to do all my main vocals and critical recordings.
